For five years, Keenan has made the trip from Elizabeth, Colorado to Roundup River Ranch. What first began as something his parents signed him up for when he was younger has now become a place he returns to with confidence and gratitude.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keenan lives with diabetes, which is why his mom first applied for him to come to camp. At home, he\u2019s used to being homeschooled, working out, and spending time on his own. Camp is different.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love talking to people,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he said with a grin. \u201cIt\u2019s just my favorite thing to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0At Roundup River Ranch, there are \u201cso many people to talk to,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>and that simple joy has become one of Keenan\u2019s favorite parts of the week.\u00a0Being surrounded by other kids who understand diabetes makes a difference, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing around other people with diabetes and all that stuff, it feels the same,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>explic\u00f3. \u201cIt\u2019s good.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In a place where everyone shares some version of a medical journey, Keenan doesn\u2019t have to explain himself. He can just be a kid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The camp theme in 2025 was \u201cYou Belong Here,\u201d and when asked what that means to him, Keenan put it simply: \u201cyou\u2019re meant to be here.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 From the bus ride into the mountains to spotting familiar counselors waiting to welcome him back, he said, \u201cIt\u2019s just everything.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over time, camp has helped him grow in quiet but meaningful ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just feel really welcome,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>dijo. \u201cIt makes me want to help other people at home.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

Whether he\u2019s offering encouragement to another camper or jumping into activities with enthusiasm, Keenan leads with kindness \u2013 something he says his counselors model well.\u00a0When it comes to activities, fishing tops the list.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never do it,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he said, laughing. \u201cSo it\u2019s like the first time doing things. Catching a fish \u2013 it\u2019s just so great.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

He also loves the dancing, the equestrian rides, and all the moments that feel, in his words, \u201cAwesome\u2026 fantastic\u2026 fun.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Keenan admits he was nervous the first time he came. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really want to go,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he shared honestly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

But now, his advice to any campers feeling unsure is, \u201cYou\u2019ll be happy you went. I went, and I\u2019m having a great time.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
