Summer Camp 6: Lung, Severe Allergic, & Immune System Conditions

For campers, Roundup River Ranch is more than a place to spend a week in the summer. It’s a place where they can leave behind the challenges of everyday life, build lifelong friendships, and discover who they are. After nine summers at camp, Camper AG knew that feeling well.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, AG now lives in Colorado. He was able to attend Roundup River Ranch because of his medical journey with lung disease and stress disorders. Looking back at his time at camp, he wouldn’t change a thing.

“I do not regret it at all. I’m grateful,” AG said.

When AG wasn’t at camp, he loved staying active. Whether he was playing football, basketball, baseball, hockey, or practicing taekwondo, sports had always been a big part of his life. At camp, he found just as much excitement through activities that challenged him and brought campers together, like ziplining and the rock-climbing wall.

When asked about his favorite camp memories, two experiences immediately came to mind.

“CROM or the Carnival,” he stated.

While the activities made camp fun, what kept AG coming back year after year was how camp made him feel. It was one of the few places where he could set aside the worries that came with his medical journey and simply enjoy being a kid.

“It’s a place that you don’t have to worry about your problems,” AG reflected.

Over nine summers, AG has grown alongside camp. The encouragement he received from counselors and fellow campers helped shape the way he looks toward the future.

“I see myself helping people,” AG answered when asked about where he sees himself at the age of 20.

After experiencing everything camp had to offer, AG hoped others would have the chance to create those same memories. When asked what he would say to someone considering their first summer at Roundup River Ranch, he shared his insight.

“If you come to this camp, you aren’t going to regret it,” he said.

For AG, those words came from nearly a decade of laughter, friendships, and unforgettable experiences. If he had to sum up Roundup River Ranch in just three words, he would say, without hesitation:

“Best camp ever.”
