Medical Minute: Neurologic + Genetic Conditions and Summer Camp 3

By Sydney Jansen

Welcome back to the Medical Minute! This month, we are joined by Dr. Danielle Barber, a Neurologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Barber explains how children with Neurologic and Genetic diagnoses benefit from coming to medically-supported camps such as Roundup River Ranch.

“Hi there. I’m Danielle Barber and I work at Children’s Hospital Colorado as a Neurologist. I got connected to camp about a year and a half ago when I met Dr. Ben Ross. This next summer, our third Summer Camp session is serving campers with Neurologic and Genetic diagnoses. I want to share with you why camp is so important for kids with these diagnoses. For example, things like Epilepsy, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, kids with these kinds of diagnoses have a hard time going to regular camp because if they have a seizure, they might be worried they’re going to be sent home. The staff at Roundup River Ranch, as well as the resources and equipment, are incredibly prepared and able to handle pretty much everything. As long as parents are comfortable, the staff are comfortable taking care of your kids and having a really good time. I’ll share with you a really heartfelt moment. When my daughter was anxious to go up the Rock Wall, one of her buddies at camp sat down and gave her a pep talk and shared with her some of the struggles that she had been through before. There are the kind of things that really only happen at Roundup. It’s a special place.”

Diagnoses served during this third Summer Camp Session include: Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy/Stroke/TBI, Craniofacial Abnormalities (including but not limited to Cleft Lip/Palate), Spina Bifida, Genetic Conditions, Neurofibromatosis, and Dermatologic conditions.

Our fourth Family Camp Session will serve campers with Neurologic Conditions. Want to know if you qualify for our Summer Camp or Family Camp Sessions? Reach out to medteam@roundupriverranch.org!
