Meet Camper Israel

When camper Israel arrived at Roundup River Ranch, he was very nervous. This was his first time at camp, and he wasn’t sure what to expect. Then, he leaned into the camp magic.

“I felt in my comfort zone,” Israel said. “I could really talk to people more. That’s the special thing about being here.”

Israel first heard about Roundup River Ranch through Children’s Hospital. Since being born early, the right side of Israel’s body is weaker than his left side, so he doesn’t use his right hand. His mother wanted to give him a childhood experience she didn’t have, so Israel came to camp! He found it especially easy to make friends at camp, crediting the counselors for creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere. He spent the week cheering for his cabin friends and encouraging others to jump into activities with him.

“I think new campers will really like this camp,” Israel mentioned. “If you keep looking forward to this camp, you may like it a lot because it will impact you like it did for me.”

Israel even embraced the role of unofficial camper photographer, snapping photos of every activity and moment with his personal camera.

“It’s really good if you’re trying to find your talent here, like me taking pictures. Especially if your talent is to have fun, meet other people, or laugh.”

Israel’s philosophy of taking risks and inspiring others to do the same created many special memories for him and his friends at camp. The “You Belong Here” theme resonated with him this summer in particular, as he felt like he belonged here at camp.

“It means anybody can come and enjoy nature,” Israel reflected. “If you’re blind, if you’re paralyzed, just come. I think you’ll really enjoy it, it will embrace you.”
