Family Camp 2: Diabetes & Endocrine Conditions

“Amazing, kindness, and caring.”

Three words the Morris family used to describe Roundup River Ranch, and three that they experienced during their first ever Family Camp weekend.

Nichole Morris, along with her son Terrell and her daughter Takara, came to Roundup from Colorado Springs after learning about it at Children’s Hospital, where Terrell goes for his Type 1 Diabetes appointments. Three years after Terrell’s diagnosis, the Morris family found comfort, connection, and belonging among other families who understand life with a life-altering diagnosis at Family Camp.

“As a parent, it’s a relief to be surrounded with parents who know the diagnosis, who know the late-night lows, that know the sick plan, that know the anxiety with sending your kids to school,” Nichole shared.

For Nichole, one of the most meaningful parts of the weekend was connecting with other parents who truly understood her family’s experiences.

“For us, just to all be together to share our journeys, super thankful for that,” Nichole said with a smile.

For Terrell and Takara, Family Camp offered a chance to spend quality time together while making new friends and trying new activities. Experiencing Roundup for the first time with his family helped Terrell feel comfortable from the start.

“It’s awesome, actually. Instead of being alone with strangers, you actually get to be with your family, people that you know,” Terrell reflected.

Nichole also appreciated the welcoming environment that allowed her children to have fun and feel understood. She chimed in, “To see the kids and just see them get to be themselves, but also just get to see them be with people that know their experiences, it’s been great.”

Throughout the weekend, Takara and Terell made new friends and created memories that will stay with them long after camp ended. One highlight was performing in the Variety Show, where laughter filled the room as they took the stage in Care Bare onesies.

“We all decided for the talent show, we were all going to dress up at Care Bears with red skirts, and it was really funny. It was, like, just a really good moment for me,” Takara said.

Takara also loved kayaking on Rose Lake.

“I got to splash my mom with water,” she laughed.

Nichole and Terrell shared a love for the Challenge Course and playing basketball at the Camp carnival, where they were able to play together and also mingle with other families.

Although this was their first time at Roundup River Ranch, the Morris family hopes it won’t be their last. When asked about what she hopes for the future of camp, Nicole’s answer was simple..

“To be somewhere where you can really tell that everyone really, truly loves the work that they’re doing, and are truly here to support you and support your family, it’s amazing. I hope it grows, I hope it’s still here for many years.”

It’s a wish we share. Thanks to the generosity of our community, families like the Morrises can find connection, understanding, and pure childhood joy at Roundup River Ranch for years to come.
