National Nurse Practitioners Week is November 10-16th. Nurse Practitioners play a very important role at camp, providing crucial medical care for our campers. We also now have Nurse Practitioners serving on our Medical Advisory Committee, including Emily Barr! Get to know Emily through a Q&A with her!
Q: What inspired you to become a Nurse Practitioner?
A: I worked with children and infants with HIV back in 1990 in California on a Christmas tree farm where they lived and I met a few pediatric nurse practitioners and they were really cool and I thought their job seemed fun.
Q: What is your specialty?
A: I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and a midwife so I get to work with pregnant women, new moms, kids, and teenagers living with HIV!
Q: How did you hear about Roundup River Ranch?
A: I started working at a Paul Newman Serious Fun Camp in New York in 1998. So when I moved to Colorado in 2001 I started asking when they might build a camp here. So, they called me when they decided to have a Serious Fun camp in Colorado.
Q: How long have you been involved with Roundup River Ranch?
A: I became involved before it was ever built. I saw camp when it was just the river, the railroad and the little cabin.
Q: How has volunteering at Roundup River Ranch impacted your career?
A: Camp has made me a better nurse practitioner and a better person because it helps me find joy when things get hard and also it challenges me in all the right ways. I also have learned some good dance moves!
Q: What is your favorite part about camp?
A: I love singing and dancing at meals! I also think the horses are really cool.
Q: Can you share a little bit about your involvement on the Medical Advisory Committee?
A: I help nurse practitioners and doctors figure out what kids need to help them become campers. I also tell new kids about camp to help them decide if they want to come to camp, and then I bring them to camp and hang out with them all week! It’s a great job.
Thank you, Emily, for your passion as a Nurse Practitioner for not only your patients, but all of our campers!
